Centrifugal Force

So, I actually have been painting in the four months since my last post, although somewhat sporadically.  And even more sporadic is the photographing of my work, so I can share it! :)  Despite the smiley face, I DESPISE photographing my work.  I can never get it just right, but I try to get close.  Here's one of my latest pieces, which will be in the show "Celebration of Creativity" at Southminster Presbyterian Church in Beaverton, OR, next weekend, March 1-5.  Check out their website for more details.

It's a good thing we all have different tastes, or we'd all want the same thing! My husband, who is my favorite critic, doesn't care for this painting, and yet I really like it. I like reds and oranges, which may explain it... and he is red/green color blind, which may explain it, too! He is drawn to composition and value, but the variations in similar-valued reds and oranges don't stand out to him. He can see blues pretty well; too bad the leaves don't turn blue in the fall!

I've had cause to be thankful for the photo-gathering trips made the autumn before last, since I did not have an opportunity to go on any this last fall (newborn infants are rather time-consuming!).

The tone of this painting is a bit somber, although with a few high notes in it. In fact, that mood is what inspired the title. Just as I sometimes enjoy listening to a heavy, mournful piece of orchestral music, I find a melancholic beauty in a gray, overcast day.

Roadside Attraction

The area in which I live is very beautiful. Majestic mountains, rolling hills, high desert, mighty rivers, we've got it all. Sometimes, though, it's the small things that inspire, like a little shoot of grass poking up through its colorful, dying predecessors.

A Creek Runs Through It

This scene was a challenge. I wanted to convey the depth of the woods beyond the creek while retaining the feeling of simplicity and serenity. A peaceful Autumn morning filled with sunshine, and a bubbling brook beckoning in the shade; what a beautiful world God made.

Country Mile

A group of artists met and painted en plein air at this lovely site near Glenwood, Washington. At the time, I just had to paint a grove of aspens in the other direction, but took lots of photographs, including the one which inspired this painting.

The aspens are beautiful year-round, but the fall colors make such a nice contrast to the shadowy trunks.
