I'm grateful to my friend, Donna, for showing me this location. It's about a mile hike from the parking area, but absolutely worth it. My painting doesn't come close to conveying the tranquility and lovely sense of separation from the real world that I felt.... except for when I was setting up and a large fish jumped in the water near me... reminded me of the goose...

Oak Tree and Goose Story

I met up with my friend, Todd, recently, to paint this oak tree. While we were painting, a goose came up from a nearby pond and seemed very friendly. Todd wanted a picture of it, so I picked up some grasses and fed them to the goose, luring him into the sunshine. Unfortunately, the goose decided he liked me, and terrorized me the rest of the time we were there. I stomped, yelled, and hit the ground with a stick, all to no avail; the goose stuck right by me to the end. I was afraid he'd bite me, and I think Todd mainly thought it was funny. He even walked me to my car! The distraction made focusing on painting a bit difficult...

Columbia Cliffs - SOLD

It was very windy the day I painted this, and I probably looked pretty funny with my windbreaker hood cinched up around my face, but the result was worth it. Painting backlit scenes is a bit new to me, and I had a lot of fun putting color into the shadows of the cliffs.

Morning Glory

My plein air group had its weekly meeting at Rowena Crest, in the Tom McCall Preserve, a couple weeks ago. There is a LOT to see from this area, from wildflowers to sweeping views of the Columbia River and the Gorge in both directions. I was drawn to this scene in part because of where I stood to paint it: I was not far from the others, but felt completely isolated because of the rolling terrain that separated us. It was quiet, calm and peaceful until one of my painting comrades warned me of rattlesnakes!

I've never claimed to be a botanist or horticulturist, but if I keep painting flowers, I might be able to name more than roses, tulips and dandelions... if short-term memory loss doesn't slow me down!
